Serious question: How on earth does anyone raise their kids to be honest and hardworking and, you know, not total assholes when Donald Trump is the fucking president?

I think about this every week. Is teaching them to the right thing wrong?

We remind them that this is a terrible time in the U.S., it's temporary and something they'll be telling their grandchildren one day. For us Canadians, being accused of being a security threat to the U.S. is so outrageous, it confirms the craziness.

This is an opportunity to teach them that people in positions of power are not always right, and that ideas etc must be judged on their merits.

In a true democracy, it is our right and duty to challenge and question authority. It is an important lesson for children to learn. Power should not be respected without question. Respect and power are earned, not given. Powerful people are often corrupt, systems often unjust.

Despite what the news cycle suggests, there are actually more people in the world than Trump, and I'd venture most of them are better role models than that. My take would be, as long as you are honest and hardworking, your kids have enough to orient themselves by.

I've often wondered how Trump-supporting Evangelicals explain away the President's decidedly unJesuslike behavior to their kids. "Mom, what does it mean, 'move on her like a bitch'?"

Oh, please. If parents were able to raise honest & hardworking kids when Bill "I did not have sex with that woman, but I sure enjoyed playing with a cigar and splattering my DNA on her" Clinton, raising kids now is a piece of cake.
