We used to say of Trump's attacks on democracy, "This is not normal." But as Republicans dig in to protect the ring leaders of the plot to overthrow the 2020 election, it's time for a revise: "This is now normal."

Unvaxxed people are filling up Maryland hospital beds again, so it's resulting in reduced services like surgeries for everybody else. Going without 💉💉💉can affect a lot more people than just you.

I read a galley copy. It is as meticulous & carefully written as any nonfiction book I’ve ever read.

I haven’t read the book, but Soni’s questions were incredibly insightful & his attention to detail was superlative

Trump’s not an officeholder. He’s not a candidate. He’s got millions in the bank, $100M in his PAC and a billion-dollar SPAC. But the RNC is still using their money to pay his bills.

As hospital systems buckle beneath influx of unvaccinated COVID patients, some thoughts on the sociopathy of the politicians and media figures who are propagandizing against vaccines in hopes of prolonging the epidemic to advance a political agenda

This whole thread is a wake up call. On the individual level, the vast vast vast majority of us will be fine under omicron. But on the societal level you’re looking at the potential collapse of hospital systems.

If you don't watch Tucker Carlson regularly, I think it's worth reading through this to see how he barrages his viewers with near-apocalyptic victimhood narratives and dishonest partisan claims. He does this every night.

In fact, my hospital system shut down most “elective” (but still needed) surgeries today.

The new Dutch government is announcing to build three nuclear plants. Great news for climate, the EU decision to include nuclear energy in the taxonomy and anybody who has argued (together with us) for nuclear. Congratualtions and thank you! Let's go on.

Gorsuch's crusade against vaccine mandates hasn't won over a majority of the Supreme Court (yet). But Trump judges are already citing it as established precedent in their increasingly crazed anti-vax rulings.

Wow, at least 3x, maybe closer to 5x higher COVID death rate in very strong "red" counties vs strong "blue" counties now.

Conquest was 89 or 90 at the time, and his recall of even the most arcane aspects of Soviet history were extraordinary -- as were his reflections on Kingsley Amis and Philip Larkin. Easily the best lunch I ever had or will ever have.

I haven't got much more to say about Hitch on the 10th anniversary of his death that I haven't said or written before. But here is a photo I took in Menlo Park, California, sometime in 2007, with a man he so admired (as do I), Robert Conquest.
