On a patio/back porch after 2-3 drinks (no more) with 2-3 max. That's the where (and when) the magic happens.

The actual substance of what emerges changes based on the number of people involved; I like to think of convos in "archaeological" terms. Also, for surfacing good ideas, Asimov recommends keeping it small to allow for more risk in voicing what might otherwise remain hidden

I agree. When I’m in large group, I end up hanging out with lots of people without hanging out with anybody at all.

I feel like there’s always subgroups within large groups and people divide up in big hangouts anyway

The point of big groups/gatherings is to expose you to many people in a short period of time, a few of which you’ll click with enough to get to know in a small group or individual setting.

As # of people included in a conversation goes up, # of choices for topic goes down. I like big groups only in dynamic settings. A house party, or a bar with many options to move around and break off into small groups. One big group all seated at the same table is rough.
