Short thread as stranded assets go mainstream in the Lex column today. The key point is that it is not just a question of the volumes that get strandded, but the lower price you get for the residual volumes you are still able to sell under a given carbon budget. 1/n

We're pleased to see Govt taking action to end sale of new petrol/diesel vehicles by 2035 or earlier. Transport is the largest emitting sector of the economy, and this clarity is welcome. We're gathering more evidence on the phase-out as part of our Sixth Carbon Budget work.

Reminder: Switching to EVs will save the UK £billions. A 2030 ban would save more money than a 2040 ban. (Analysis from CCC including cost of purchase, refuelling, charging point infrastructure, electricity generation & network expansion)

2030 switchover is doable for the UK electricity grid. Questions are around the supply chain for the vehicles, batteries and e.g. cobalt that goes into them. Hoping progressive companies in those areas can give govt comfort on 2030 in the consultation.

Ps much better to switch over by 2030 if we possibly can. By then should be cheaper to buy as well as cheaper to run than conventional cars, so we'd save motorists money as well as cutting carbon quicker

3 key changes in today's announcement: - full switch of new sales by 2035 not 2040 - zero means zero: no hybrids - could be earlier subject to consultation (right to do so given genuine challenge in scaling up supply from current 3%, but industry must be pushed hard)

“an end to the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2035, or earlier if a faster transition is feasible” Cars are typically on UK roads for 14 years so 2035 is in line with Net Zero 2050 are gathering evidence now on even earlier date

Just a reminder that Call for Evidence on the UK 6th carbon budget and Welsh targets closes next Weds, 5 Feb. We’d love to hear from you and there’s still time to respond - remember you don’t need to answer every question!

Uber makes a deal with Nissan in the UK. The pressure on ride hailing services to go electric is going to ramp up really fast. Potent combination of economics, city policies and corporate image concerns.

Our Land Use Report in 11 tweets. This report was *particularly* challenging, because land is a fixed resource. There are hard choices. The scenario is compliant, with policy recommendations to drive it. This is ‘the minimum’ required. We must get cracking.

It is worth repeating - although depressing that it should be necessary. If you love gardens and gardening and have one iota of responsibility for our ecology and environment DO NOT USE PEAT! It really is that simple.

I really recommend today's land use report. I spent much of my time thinking about this & am impressed at how they have skilfully balanced the different uses we have for land, including food production, wildlife, carbon & bioenergy

Nice thread - a levy (or a well-designed obligation) on aviation is key and becoming an increasingly obvious/natural part of the net zero policy mix - from one or two discussions I think the UK sector might be up for more serious thinking about how this might be designed..
