With Google hellbent on splitting the web into "secure" and "not secure" which is Animal Farm-like talk, what's really going on is two webs are being created from one. Google's owned web, and the open web. There may be ways to do the open one better this time.

BTW, one thing Google is not upfront about is that if you use Chrome, everything you see in the browser, after it's decrypted, is also totally visible to Google.

Have they ever said they don't use your info? Do they change it? They could. Do you trust them? If you use Chrome you do, whether you know it or not.

So for example, Google could do to Verizon what they're afraid Verizon will do to them. They could replace Verizon's ads with their own. Verizon would never know. Nor would you. Or the sites with the ads running on them.

Basically Google is trying to become the government of the web. Without any accountability. Or laws governing their behavior. Or recourse. It's a huge power grab. I'm sure this all seems very arcane to most people. They're counting on that. ;-)

What's really galling is that the EFF, supposedly a watchdog looking out for our freedoms, is complicit in trying to hand the web over to Google.

Dave, what is your alternative for protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data in transit? TLS / HTTPS lets me read what I want to read on the open Web without others nearby passively monitoring me. To me it is a good thing that protects openness.

It's like asking me how I'm going to stop smoking. I don't smoke. So I don't have an answer. This isn't a problem I have in other words.

No. That's a step too far. Google does NOT own https websites. Yes, Chrome sees what you see, but hey do NOT share that with Google. If they did that, they'd be caught.

For this claim to be true, when chrome displays a web page, it would have to send a decrypted copy to Google. That's a lot of data flowing back. Nobody has seen a touch of that. Nor Mozilla, nor anyone else.

I understand your argument that it isn't needed for all sites (not convinced but see why you say that) and understand the burden involved in converting old sites. Those arguments have something to stand on.

But fearmongering "Google is looking and seeing everything you see" is just wrong. And I know you have me muted and don't see any of this, but it's still simply wrong.

Get ready to add #SAFEnetwork & you have your own secure decentralised cloud. Then with separation of apps and data, app builders will deliver value, apps you value, rather than extract it from your privacy and your data. A revolution is coming!
