There is a smaller group of climate protesters here today (Sunrise is mostly at a training in Berkeley) but there are shouts of "we can't wait!" as Perez begins a likely vote on affirming the "no unsanctioned debates" (ie no climate debate) rule.

Perez plowing through his argument on debate rules. "We sought to strike a balance between the candidates' ability to campaign in the states while setting a debate schedule."

Supporters of climate debate are now speaking against the Perez position. "We, as a body, never voted on these debate rules. We as a DNC have changed the debate rules more than once."

Maria Cardona, a DNC member who works at the Dewey Square Group, now speaking to defend Perez. "I don't need a specific, focused climate debate at the expense of a debate that I would want on immigration, on white supremacy, on the economy."

A territorial DNC activist now speaking for climate debate: "Climate change, as it is, we feel every day in the pacific islands... we are environmental advocates and it is very, very important for this to be a priority."

Another pro-Perez speaker: "10 candidates have committed to a climate forum in prime time on CNN. If that's not enough, there's going to be a forum on MSNBC. Climate change is not being ignored!"

MI DNC member Michelle Dietrich up now: "We came together once, not so long ago, about the superdelegates issue... I talk to local party leaders, and they don't get our rules. They ask us, why is there even a debate about having [the climate debate]?"

It's not an existential threat to humanity's existence! It's a threat to a lot of us, but it's not a civilization-level threat like climate change.

There might be another rationale in play inside the DNC: Pennsylvania. Hillary was 100% right about coal miners losing their jobs, but the DNC may have decided that it didn’t do her any favors in 2016 & want to avoid that risk.

End the #DNC rule against unofficial debates and no topic will be prioritized by the DNC as a debate subject.

My take: Who cares? More conversation is good! If voters want more debates let them have them. The networks love it! The young turks /Rogan will probably do it for free! If the candidates want to tour instead have their advisors debate! Why not?

The debates are important, but last night on her show Rachel Maddow seemed to suggest MSNBC would welcome giving a precious primetime platform for serious candidates who cease to qualify & MSNBC has already shown a willingness to do deep dives on issues, including climate change.
