Serious question for the WFB scholars: when he said “standing athwart history, yelling stop,” did he realize what a self-defeating, impotent thing he was saying? As history doesn’t stop—and certainly not from yelling.

If the progressives are insisting on going 100 mph and the conservatives yell stop, then on average society proceeds at 50 mph and maybe that's as it should be.

"Self-defeating" and "impotent" sounds much like the majority of Conservatism, Inc. these days. They are content to scrape and kneel, so long as their portion of crumbs are bigger.

Brittle is the bedroughted branch Once unmoving by dint of strength Now immobility from a failure to move What good to stand your ground upon quicksand? What good to die on a hill when you catch sight of the mountain? Heroes belong to their time, but reflection is timeless

It’s worth reading the NR mission statement again rather than taking this line out of context. It wasn’t always the rag it is today

Thank you! I've never felt comfortable with that phrase, either. I'm glad that our confusing new age has a wider conservative continuum than what the tired, old National Review Thought Complex provided.

To be fair our confusing new age has a wider conservative continuum because Buckley and his tired old National Review carved out that space.

This is not something I would ask in public. You might test things out with a friend in the future, so that your ignorance is not on full display.

I always understood this as pushing against "modern realities" that want to destroy the order of things. I think that's what he understood as "history."
