In late 1945, Dizzy Gillespie got into the studio with strings to record a tribute to Jerome Kern. Kern’s estate was furious at Dizzy’s liberties with the melodies, and demanded the 78s be pulled. They were, and remained mostly unheard for 30 years. “The Way You Look Tonight”:

It’s very easy to forget how fascinating a player Bill Evans was in his early days; “Portrait in Jazz” was one of my first jazz albums that really knocked me out—I had no idea what was going on musically, but it sounded nice. Listening again is revelatory.
