This is a real KKK poster from the 1930s spreading fear about communists. Notice how "social equality" is seen as a negative.

This is why I feel like black activism must fundamentally be left-leaning, if not leftist entirely. It's not enough to be centrist or liberal, and I can comfortably say this being center-left myself. The country is just so far to the right it needs a powerful leftward force.

“Social Equality” was code for “sex with whites women” - another myth Southerners perpetrated about why Blacks wanted civil rights.

Not even 100 years ago this stuff was in full effect. We’re only 1, 2 or 3 generations removed - nothing changes, just cycles again and again. Until someone jams a stick in the front spokes.

Yes. One of the things white supremacists did during Reconstruction was paint newly elected Black leaders as socialists because they wanted to spend taxpayer money in the "Black" parts of town. Railing against "socialism" and "social justice" has been a dog whistle for 150 years.

Seems things still have somewhere to go while we make headway, but it does not mean we cannot stop and still fight for Social Equality of all peoples.
