A bit of history first on Trey Trainor. Trump first nominated Trainor to the @FEC in September of 2017.https://publicintegrity.org/politics/will-donald-trump-let-the-federal-election-commission-rot/ …
Trump's nomination of Trey Trainor to the @FEC lapsed in the Senate at the end of 2017. Trump renominated Trainor. The nomination lapsed again at the end of 2018. Trump renominated Trainor a third time. Lapsed again at the end of 2019. Fourth time's a charm? We'll see today.
Meanwhile, the bipartisan, six-commissioner @FEC hasn't been capable of enforcing campaign finance laws since Sept. 1, when VC Matthew Petersen resigned. That's because the FEC needs at least four commissioners to conduct high-level business.https://publicintegrity.org/politics/federal-election-commission-fec-to-effectively-shut-down/ …
Trey Trainor is a GOP nominee to the @FEC. Ds have also recommended to Trump an FEC attorney—D Shana Broussard—to fill one of the other vacant slots. But Trump has not nominated Broussard, who if appointed would become the agency's 1st black commissionerhttps://publicintegrity.org/politics/fec-federal-election-commission-trump-mcconnell-schumer/ …
The @FEC not having enough commissioners to enforce laws, conduct meetings, provide formal advice, etc., hasn't been w/o consequencehttps://publicintegrity.org/politics/trump-fec-campaign-election-quorum-pascrell/ …
Expect Democrats today to highlight Trey Trainor's ties to President Trump. Trainor has been a dedicated Trump supporter who worked for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. This is Trainor then:pic.twitter.com/6pof07Hgr8

Sen. @amyklobuchar, D, is now up. She says she's "deeply disappointed" the Senate is not nominating @FEC commissioners on "a bipartisan basis." (See earlier tweet about Shana Broussard.) Approving Trey Trainor and giving the FEC a quorum w/o a 1+ Dem "does more harm than good."
Sen. @AmyKlobuchar, D, pulling no punches on Trey Trainor's @FEC nomination as Trainor looks on: Trainor "doesn't believe in the basic campaign finance law," she says, adding he, "consistently worked to dismantle the rules that keep corruption out of our system."

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R, now speaking. He’s advocating for a “clean slate” of six new @FEC commissioners, noting that there are three vacancies on the six-member commission and three more commissioners who’ve collectively overstayed the expirations of their terms by 30+ years.
Mitch McConnell now asking @FEC nominee Trey Trainor questions.
McConnell: Does Trainor think the FEC does not enforce the law?
Trainor: "I do not."
.@FEC nominee Trey Trainor tells senators that the Federal Election Commission's most important duty is facilitating campaign finance disclosure.
.@FEC nominee Trey Trainor to senators: "I fully recognize that the touchstone for all regulation of political speech is the 1st Amendment, and that the U.S. Supreme Court has held that our current campaign finance regulations, particularly the disclosure regime, are ...
More @FEC nominee Trainor: "... an allowable exception to the 1st Amendment for the purpose of deterring corruption."
Sen. @amyklobuchar asks @FEC nominee Trey Trainor about Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trainer says interference occurred. Klobuchar asks about enhancing online political ad disclaimers. Trainor says he doesn't want to prejudge a matter that could come before the FEC.
(Programming note: follow @ZachMontellaro and @saramswann for more reporting on today's @FEC confirmation hearing of Trey Trainor.)
Sen. @cindyhydesmith, R, asks @FEC nominee Trey Trainor about his past work for @realdonaldtrump. As an FEC commissioner, how would he approach Trump matters? Trainor: "Objectively ... I will look at the facts, I will look at the law."
Sen. @cindyhydesmith also asks @FEC nominee Trey Trainor about whether he'll recuse himself on Trump-related matters. "I will approach the ethics officials" at the FEC for guidance, Trainor says.
Now, @SenSchumer, D, is up, and not surprisingly, he's ripping into @FEC nominee Trey Trainor for his "discouraging" views on the Voting Rights Act. Schumer also blasting Trainor for his views on campaign finance disclosure.
While @FEC nominee Trey Trainor has locked his Twitter feed, which previously provided insight into his political views, here are some screenshots from Trainor’s Facebook page.pic.twitter.com/3wgzURmA5l
.@FEC nominee Trey Trainor tells Sen. @RoyBlunt that the Federal Election Commission's advisory opinion function is "one of the most critical." This is the process of the FEC providing political actors formal advice on the law. A current example:https://publicintegrity.org/politics/nabilah-islam-health-care-fec-congress/ …
.@FEC nominee Trey Trainor asked about his previous support for defunding the Texas Ethics Commission. Trainer says Texas Ethics Commission has a "separation of powers issue" and has "police powers" with which he disagrees.
Does @FEC nominee Trey Trainor believe in the mission of the Federal Election Commission?
"Absolutely," Trainor tells senators.
