So how would you unit test a repository function that writes objects to a database?

Why do you need to write a test for your database driver? Do you not trust the drive vendor?

Sounds like unit tests are not very interesting tests.
-
They are as interesting as the logic of your system. If your code is only CRUD or glue, they aren’t.

Practice > Theory

"Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but no one knows why. In our lab, theory and practice are combined: nothing works and no one knows why."

Exception on talking to the filesystem, I think: Reads of input data that would be more obnoxious to store as constants in source code. It should be the test code reading those files, though, NOT the code under test.

It's also not a unit test if it mocks out everything that it touches. Then it's just testing whether the computer it's running on is powered up or not... and we know the answer to that.
