    This is astoundingly disappointing. This is the high school I went to in Salt Lake. The principal behaved compassionately, not recklessly.

    I read this and got curious. It turns out there are about 260M rock doves (pigeons) globally. There were approx. 90M discrete GPUs shipped in 2018. I fear the birds will have to find a new job.

    When reel-to-reel tape was the primary storage medium for a mainframe, programmers had to specify whether to read forward from the supply reel ("big" endian), or backwards from the takeup reel (which was usually smaller, and hence, "little" endian).

    Sonos states on their website that "sustainability is non-negotiable," and that they design products to minimize impact, but I work at an e-waste recycler and have demonstrable proof this is false. Sonos's "recycle mode" intentionally bricks good devices so they can't be reused.

    Hard work and taking time for yourself, friends, and family aren't incompatible. It takes both. If you burn out or deprive yourself of sleep, support, or health for too long, you'll hurt your productivity as well as your happiness.

    When I was an assistant professor, mentioned that he was taking two weeks to go hike the John Muir Trail. ("wait, we can take two weeks off?!"). I went. It was a majestic experience that I'll never regret. (Oh, and Carlos sold his startup for a rumored $200m.)

    I won't lie: I worked quite hard in grad school in my 20s. I also took more than half my weekends to go climbing or hiking in New Hampshire (&c.). Those weekends and time with my friends kept me sane, happy, and productive. 1/2

    If you don’t work nights and weekends in your 20s, you’re not going to have a successful career. Sorry.

    Get real, . The letter & response is disingenuous, and it does not speak for us. ACM should revoke its signature and stop profiteering off of taxpayer-funded research and volunteer time from scientists. Taxpayer-funded research belongs to the public.
