Of course, Abbott likely knows this. He doesn't want to ban public camping to help people experiencing homelessness. He wants to do it because his base doesn't like to see people living in extreme poverty.

It is so dispiriting when powerful public officials disregard the advice of experts who do the work guided by public policy. Abbott could talk to service providers in any Texas city and I guarantee they would tell him a ban on public camping will only make their jobs harder.

Is there anyway this is all a distraction from the fact that Abbot and republicans are going to further gerrymander the Austin metro in a few months? It feels like we should be organizing around redistricting at this moment but we’re busy talking about this insane king decrees.

I will reiterate: banning public camping will help reduce the amount of homeless coming to Austin. Banning public camping will also reduce the literring, harassment and crime. There has to be accountability and laws at some point.
