9/11 Trutherism is v prevalent. 1 in 6 believe per a 2020 AEI survey. New piece on the politics of Trutherism: 1) It used to be a mostly Democratic conspiracy theory 2) More bipartisan now 3) Possible explanations: Bush's rehabilitation, Trump's rise https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/09/10/false-toxic-sept-11-conspiracy-theories-are-still-widespread-today/ …pic.twitter.com/Tnik2FRdrj

Trutherism was clearly a thing in the direct aftermath of 9/11 -- news reports about people believing, books coming out, protesters with "Bush Knew" signs etc But a lot of the early polling data is not great. One of the first reliable polls was in 2006. Striking partisan dividepic.twitter.com/XGUGOInqfN

Basically, in the early days, the 9/11 Truthers had two distinct wings A bipartisan "conspiracy underground" that loves all these theories Democrats -- who distruted Bush and came to Trutherism that way OR who just said they believed it as a way to stick it to Bushpic.twitter.com/X5WMwz57C1

The overall numbers are sort of shocking -- some polls say a quarter of Dems, some say half believed it. That's huge! A gigantic number of people were into this stuff!

Trutherism lost some salience in the Obama Era, but then something weird happen. But in 2016ish, something weird happened: *Republican* support for Trutherism increasedpic.twitter.com/lnUC0FhUgF

Two reasons for this: **Bush became less polarizing as a Republican-yet-occasional-Trump-critic. Some Rs turned against him, Ds find Strange New Respect. So D Trutherism decreases, R Trutherism increases **Trump engages with people like Alex Jones, does more conspiracy stuffpic.twitter.com/ZHbROv0OCS

The result: a new forever conspiracy theory Sure, it's less relevant and probably less prevalent than before. BUT conspiracy theories have a way of sticking around. And, so far, this one is too.pic.twitter.com/pEpeNua76m

Right, but Bush did know. There's video of Condi admitting as much in congressional hearings. There's obviously tons of conspiracies about 9/11 but there's no disputing that for whatever reason Bush and company knew of impending terror attacks and did nothing.
