    ‘s younger sister Emily Catherine, died 2 February 1866. The pastel of Darwin and his sister was the earliest portrait of Darwin. While Darwin was in Edinburgh, she and the other sisters would write long, loving letters to him. ---

    Darwin & Steinbeck fans will be interested to know that Steinbeck's Sea of Cortez expedition was inspired by Darwin's Beagle voyage. Check out the wonderful book "Parallel Expeditions: Charles Darwin and the Art of John Steinbeck" (1995) by my friend & colleague Brian Railsback.

    In 1940, after publishing The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck went on an expedition to the Gulf of California with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, where they collected specimens, including this octopus. Read “The Log from the Sea of Cortez” to learn more about this expedition!

    Mary Somerville is being celebrated in the US Google Doodle (no, she wasn’t one of the two first female Fellows of the Royal Astronomical Society - she and Caroline Herschel were given honorary fellowships and other women had to wait until the 20thC)
