@nitsanw Yeah, I've been trying to do that, but I don't appear to have a Linux that can support "instructions" events in perf.

@headius @nitsanw BTW, does "perf" have other counters available? Notably, what would "-prof perf" say on that instance of yours?

@shipilev @nitsanw I'm not sure which counters are disabled; perf list shows them all as present. -prof perf seems to run though.

@headius @nitsanw It runs, sure, but what counters are non-zero? Please show the "-prof perf" output?

@shipilev @nitsanw Looks like most of the counters aren't supported. This is RHEL 6.4 on an EC2 c3.large BTW: https://gist.github.com/headius/b12f0a03373d41baa9b9 …

@headius @nitsanw Yes, all hardware counters are missing. The four counters on the top are OS-level ones. Get a real machine ;)

@shipilev @nitsanw Yes yes...don't think I haven't requested one :-) We're not that rich over here in OSS land.

@headius @nitsanw I doesn't have to be an enterprise-class server. A desktop will do for most benchmarks like fannkuch. :)

@nitsanw @shipilev I think your help has focused what I will show: common Java patterns down to the metal plus "bad" workarounds.
