I got to wonder if there was a design goal to be as inefficient as possible in Java IO libraries. The amount of wasteful allocation and copying beggars belief.

A separate package wouldn't have gone amiss either. Mind you at least it wasn't the STL, I unfondly remember having to learn templates just so I could pass different collections into a function...

I like C++ but the STL is not the best bit. I don't find it very intuitive.
