Irish people who move to Britain are often surprised by how little some people here know about Britain's colonial past in Ireland. Serious question, from someone who didn't come through the British school system, how, if it all, does Ireland feature?

The potato famine is briefly discussed as an abstract terrible tragedy, but with no context whatsoever, and largely to explain Irish emigration to the USA. Even in c20th History A-Level (mostly WW1 and WW2) the emergence of the Republic is barely even mentioned.

The Empire and colonialism, when it is mentioned in British schooling at all, is like looking through something through the wrong end of a telescope - all very indistinct and so very far away.
