@mononcqc @jlouis666 interesting data point in SO 2019 dev survey: Elixir is on the most loved languages at 68.2%, but Erlang is on the most hated languages at 52.6%, while both are at the bottom of the "wanted" category. Does syntax make up all the difference? Or age/"sexiness"?

I don’t really care about what stackoverflow surveys have to say. It’s not really a community on its own (I can’t see myself participating more over time, only less), and regarding the poll, nothing in there is actionable or constructive.

If the meaningfulness of information is described by the behaviour that derives from it, a stackoverflow survey is worth a shoulder shrug and a 15 words mention on a random slack channel.

People have been laughing at the idea of using erlang since I started in 2009, and have complained about the syntax the entire time as well. I’m not surprised at all.

Syntax, lack of type system, no imperative functionality, it is slow, it has no macros, it lacks libraries, ... I totally get people are usually focusing on the parts that could be better, but I think it shadows all the things that works better than in most other systems.

There is something to say about the audience that takes the survey. I’ve never once in my time writing erlang either looked at SO and gotten help there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t think it’s where erlang friendly people hang out.

Bit syntax / comprehensions making me happy since 2000 and no other PL makes protocol hacking spark joy...

Ocaml stole the idea because it was good, and in Haskell you can get it through an applicative instance. Also, at
