I hate that "open source" shifted from "tools you can modify" to "shit you get for free," though, ironically, I suspect Github was a major contributor to that shift.

If GitHub wanted to monetise, funding open-source software developers and taking a small cut would have been an awesome way to do it.

Yeah, a lot of us have been trying to tell them this exact thing for a while. It's not a straightforward thing to set up, but they were in a unique position and might actually have pulled it off. It's a mystery why they never tried.

Yep. Sock puppet money and 10yo startups that haven't swung a profit. My twiddly startup is above break-even but fucked if I'm going to invest in taking on a VC. Nothing kills culture like shareholder-congruent-value culture ...
