  1. Due to an accident of birth we aren’t living in Hubei with these fellow human beings who are experiencing unimaginable suffering. Sincerely hope we can find ways to help citizens there. China sacrificing a province to save world from coronavirus

Amazing how deeply narrative has pervaded. Speaking w/ the woman who cleans our offices - caring mom of three and she hasn’t had her kids receive ANY vaccines at all because she is scared of harming them. I couldn’t persuade her. She acknowledged docs tried too. Aargh

Is it a new thing where people just walk into the street/crosswalk nonchalantly ignoring traffic? Every morning during my commute I am avoiding distracted pedestrians

Is anyone doubting human to human transmission at this point? Is there a feasible alternate explanation for 14,550 confirmed cases? Asking experts ⁦ @⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ @⁩aetiology⁩ ⁦

To reiterate: this does not mean that has been declared a pandemic. Pandemic is specific to sustained human-to-human transmission in multiple regions of the globe. We have 2 other PHEICs in effect right now, for Ebola in DRC and for polio. Neither are pandemics.

    3. -Can asymptomatic people have evidence of this novel ? It appears there are some cases of this. -Do asymptomatic people significantly contribute to driving epidemics? No. -Could it still be possible for truly asymptomatic to transmit infection? Yes but likely rare.

Pulling this out of the thread. There's lots of concern and unknowns about transmission, but the fact that most of these secondary cases are in individuals with close contact is encouraging--we'd rather see this than casual contact. Still need further data though.

Significant paper *just* out at . Bad news, which we kinda knew, is there is sustained human-to-human transmission. Goodish news: R0 estimate is 2.2, lower than SARS. But won't be easier to contain because 2020 is more connected than 2003.

Excellent post by suggests may be more contagious & less deadly: Q for ID twitter: if this plays out when should recovery rates reflect? Death rate seems consistent but reported recovery rates still low (figures make point - not updated)

The claim that "we are now faced with the most virulent virus epidemic the world has ever seen" and that the new coronavirus is 8x as infectious as SARS is completely untrue. Even if the R0 were 3.8 that would be nowhere near a record. Here is some context w/ a range of R0s:

My most formative experiences as a kid was seeing my parents do the unglamorous work of entrepreneurs. So this year my son gets to stuff name badges.

Deals announced at JPM do tend to set the tone for the start of the year. May help to note that last year BMS/Celgene was announced Friday right before JPM & Lilly/LOXO was Tuesday. With the late week, all the timings are a bit off
