For week 2 in my Network Epistemology class, we looked at a classic economics model: information cascades. The basic idea of the info. cascade model is to show that even rational individuals can sometimes engage in apparently irrational collective behavior.

It also explains why it is often the most intelligent people who are the most prolific motivated reasoners and believe the silliest things: they are the best at finding rationalisations.

Motivated reasoning is subject to a rationalisation constraint: we can only bring ourselves to believe things for which we can find a post hoc rationalisation. This creates a market for rationalisations, explaining much of political media.

People who spread rumors instinctively invoke "a friend of a friend" as the source of information, which boosts plausibility.

A dilemma: Even though it is obvious that everybody is overconfident in their political views, you should only reduce your own confidence if everyone else does so at the same time. Otherwise those who are least reflective will have the greatest influence.

Late last year I submitted a paper I really like to a major journal. Got an email from them on Jan 7 with header "Major revisions . . ." Did not open it for two weeks. Locke knew whereof he spoke. (actually, it wasn't so bad, once I read it: I might be able to succeed here)

New paper: 'Motivated Ignorance, Rationality, and Democratic Politics'. The question is: will you dislike it as much as its 4 reviewers did? Starts with a great epigraph from Locke:
