Right. I think John said "no max limit" and my hope was to get an answer to "generally recommended length" :-)
I will ask around. But as a guide, it's not likely to be longer than 320 characters, which I believe is the max we show now. If you had a meta description longer than that -- AND we used it exactly (which often isn't the case) -- longer wouldn't show.

That page has an empty description meta tag & the page doesn't otherwise have a lot of text content - what would be better to show there in your opinion? Happy to pass it on!

I’ve tried raise the lenght of the meta description to 220 characters, however G picked up a random text upon the content as usually. I think it doesn’t work if we do it manually. What would you say? It’s only dynamically and over Google’s control, IMO.

Query relevance clearly plays a big part. A lot of meta descriptions don't answer the query well enough and that causes Google not to use them
