The narrative that the games media is a clique of self-serving, liberal minded gatekeepers has always been bullshit. Once I eventually broke in I found an industry full of folks with different opinions. Creative & passionate people willing to argue their points loudly & proudly.
I always thought I'd be an outsider entering an established culture. In truth, most of us were outsiders from somewhere. But we respected one another enough to call each other out when we were wrong. And, most of the time, mature enough to listen to criticism.
Games media isn't perfect by any means. It's often low paying work, the audience can be rough, and leadership and editorial often have different missions. But it's not some cartoonish enclave of leftist clerics. Those who believe that myth, probably have a reason they need to.
Maybe these different opinions could make it in to print sometime instead of the usual spread of articles containing the same opinions on the same talking points spread across a 48 hour period that typifies what game media is these days.
I mean, that’s a painfully reductive statement to hear from a journalist. There is plenty of variety when it comes to games reporting these days if you chose to find it. But if socially conservative viewpoints aren’t that popular with this audience then perhaps there’s a reason.
Hmm, So Danny can you point out 5 relative well-known game journalists and 5 game developers who are of a more conservative mindset? just a small test to back up your claim.
I could name a bunch who we’re fiscal conservatives, religious conservatives, second amendment protectors and more. I won’t because that’s not my place - but that wasn’t my point anyway. My point was the media doesn’t gatekeep. That’s the bullshit.
Where are those who openly criticise Feminist Frequency in the mainstream games media? Can't tell me all voices get a fair go. @anitasarkeesian has harrassed freedom of opinion and speech... and the media celebrated her for it.
