People say you should work at startups because that's where the interesting work (and money) is. That's backwards! http://danluu.com/startup-tradeoffs/ …

Your own numbers from the previous tweet suggest ~1/30 US devs earns that much, which is ~1.8 standard deviations, which seems very close to “at least one, possibly two”.

The comment seems like it must >= one of: * mistaken * fabricated * deliberately misleading It would be surprising if someone with 20 years of experience working as a programmer was at one of these companies didn't make that much and found the idea that HNers could laughable.

You've written before about compensation becoming bimodal; are these kind of responses so surprising? Many devs maintain line-of-business apps for non-tech (significantly lower revenue) corps whose CEO makes less than a mid-level dev at FB.

One of my friends (~15 years experience) was hired as an individual contributor, below director level. His total comp is >$700k. He is an outlier, but $350-500k is not at all.

"One in thirty are in a group that makes median pay of $240k." doesn't seem to contradict "$300k is two standard deviations above average."
-
Where do you see "one in thirty"?

Facebook worldwide median, or Facebook US median... I'm sure a large portion of these are just people who don't live in the US.

In Indiana, engineering leaders feel a lot of pressure when other companies pay $150k for (actually) senior engineers. The bimodal distribution is very real.

There are a lot of devs not working in the US, not making that kind of money, still reading the same websites.
