      Dan Luu Retweeted Zach Holman

I've thought about this @holman tweet at least once a week since last July. Even when I've worked on things that are considered relatively hard (e.g., an algorithm that won best paper award at a top conf), the work hasn't been interview-style hard.https://twitter.com/holman/status/886428616694702080 …

Programming interviews would be wildly different if people realized that most tech jobs are pretty boring and easy.

To the extent that things are hard, it's been stuff like: Your TL thinks version control and automated tests are a waste of time. How do you convince them otherwise? Your team has 75% turnover in well under a year for... reasons. How do you stay productive?

On the flip side, when I've worked with people who are unproductive, it's never been the stuff people say interviews filter for (can't program, not smart enough). It's been stuff like: we sucked at helping the person ramp up, manager or senior team member was hostile to them, etc

The worst I've ever been at my job was at a company where I aced the very technical interview, but it turned out that the skills they actually needed were the ability to navigate a large anarchic team and juggle a dozen projects at once because the cycle time on each was so long.

...but I'm really not sure how you interview for either of those skills without letting people know that they should run a mile.

Maybe this is naive, but I think it's probably better to be up front about this? A major reason behind the attrition on some of the teams I've been on is that management completely misrepresented the team+job and people left when they found out the truth.

Oh, I agree completely that companies *should* be up front about this, I just don't know how to persuade them of that. It's both hard to get people to update their self-image, and to persuade them to do anything that makes hiring harder.

It's hard striking the right tone, but we try to do this, and I think it's a net positive. It really doesn't help the company to hire a developer who dislikes the environment, and leaves within a year.
