Wow, that door. Is it just the picture, or can you also not tell which side it hinges on?

There are two subtle clues: 1. The door's lock is on the right side (a bit below the psuedo-bar) 2. If you're actually there and it's not too sunny, you can see inside and the internal layout implies the door is hinged on the left The existence of clues appears to be accidental.

The door story surprises me. I thought the US (or cal?) was strict about doors opening outwards, so emergency exit is easy

Sorry, I should have said I love your article and totally agree!

Here's an interesting tech example: https://github.com/tpope/vim-sensible/issues/47 … "Vim-sensible" tries to be a vimrc "nobody objects to installing": couldn't remap Y to y$ (to conform to D and C) because it wasn't 100% agreed on.

A while back, Firefox kept changing their UI (IIRC, 'open download window' has been on at least 3 different keys), and largely justified 'retraining cost' due to large growth rate of new users--better experience for new outweighed cost of relearning for old.
-
But they continued to make significant changes after they got out of their high growth rate, so I'm highly doubtful that was ever the real justification.

I recall (but can't find) a story about Google changing Chrome's tab shape/color gradually over multiple releases so people wouldn't notice. cf frog in boiling water. :)

Cross-product UX compat is also important IMO, yet overlooked. Most browsers have "Open in new tab" as first action of link menu, but on Firefox Mobile it's second, after "Share link".
