Almost all of the writing I see talks about big picture stuff that's almost impossible to measure, e.g., http://web.archive.org/web/20150912041843/http://www.lincolnquirk.com/blosxom.cgi/rationality/bootcamp/munchkin.html …pic.twitter.com/iPwxQf9lx4
Devil's advocate: there isn't, because it's super hard + not worth the effort to be sufficiently rigorous about anything important
E.g., the cited author rigorously measured the time spent jumping between functions, but not the alleged improvement from testing as he goes
...let alone the cost:benefit of the intervention "watch recordings of yourself programming" which sounds very time-intensive
My guess is that there's so much low hanging fruit that it's easy to find fixes that will pay for themselves.
One weak piece of evidence for this is that, when I ask how people do things and then video, they literally don't know what they're doing
People make all kinds of claims about the efficiency of what they do that can't be correct because they don't know what they're doing.
The state of engineering productivity reminds me of sports before weight training ("don't weight train because you'll get too bulky").
There's a lot of lore out there, much of which is "obviously" wrong, and there's very little evidence for almost any practice.
If you believe that practices can make a difference, losing 5% or 10% to reviewing video seems like it will probably pay off?
In my coding courses, I'll be adding more practice on IDE operations so they become automatic & allow one to focus on higher level ops.
I see students fumbling around with their IDE, or just not being efficient, which allows for less thinking space about what they're doing.
