Clarification: I do not mean confs should not pay expenses (so that everybody can afford to attend). I’m against paying the speech itself.
For example, do you think that we'd see more good software if software companies relied solely on volunteer labor?

The question is not necessarily more good software, but higher average quality of software. In which case, it's no longer quite a reductio.

Yes. While most volunteer software projects are bad, most of the ones we see are of very high quality.
