My experience of tumblr is it is much more segmented into subcommunities than say twitter, so seems feasible both are true.
IMO you can't say both are true b/c it's a contradiction. How can you say they've solved moderation when there's so much crap on tumblr?

There are "good" communities, but that it can work for some tumblr communities doesn't mean they've cracked moderation. Ditto for reddit.

If the arugment is that lobsters should be moderated a certain way because that sometimes works for some sub-communities, that's bogus.
