There's a similar trend in OS/platform. It's amazing how quickly the consumer computing landscape has changed. http://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share#monthly-200901-201707 …pic.twitter.com/gtFvkbbcwJ
In short, as many people as before are using a PC, but they also use mobile now.
This is like saying "as many people are using mainframes as before, but they also use PCs now" in 1987.
DEC's CEO actually said something in the same vein! DEC had 140k employees in 1987 and was dead 11 years later.
Ofc. DEC's CEO was talking about minicomputers, workstations, etc., as well, but being "diversified" across all of those didn't save them.
But mainframes never died. They are still half of IBM's profits and a third of revenue. Maybe IBM will die too, but I doubt mainframes will.
I don't think anyone here is claiming that mainframes are dead or will die. But they've been in slow decline for most of my life.
IBM reported its 20th straight YoY decline in revenue, with zSeries down 40% YoY. I'm sure people will still use them for quite a while, butpic.twitter.com/kJeqD45oia
that doesn't mean I want to work on mainframes (and I know a lot of people who do since the IBM chip I worked on was both z and p series).
The parenthetical is just to say that working in a declining area tends to be a lot less nice than working in a growing area.
