How I sped up my blog by 25x-50x in four hours, including the time it took to learn basic website optimization https://danluu.com/octopress-speedup/ …pic.twitter.com/Ww2v8CakPH
Can't edit my blog post on how the web is problematic on slow connections because google docs can't handle my hotel's slow connection.pic.twitter.com/w6e4cZUX4b
Many Americans don't have access to home broadband. This is true even in this study of the 50 largest metro areas! https://policyinformatics.asu.edu/sites/default/files/%5Bterm%3Aname%5D/%5Bnode%3Acreate%3Acustom%3AYm%5D/d_msa_figures.pdf …pic.twitter.com/1wQuu1j5bw
No. That's from the top 50 largest metro areas. Broadband penetration is probably lower outside of those areas.
Here's (non-population-weighted) county data that excludes the most rural counties and is ∴ biased high https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/lots-of-people-in-cities-still-cant-afford-broadband/ …pic.twitter.com/Pi8ZEzGv9F
I believe this is the same chart, but including rural counties https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-worst-internet-in-america/ …pic.twitter.com/hqQo17tVDH
does this account for smartphone / cell based internet use?
No, but I believe you can find data on that at https://policyinformatics.asu.edu/ . Anecdotally, in rural areas, "broadband" mobile tends to be terrible
IME, when I have 4G/LTE on some interstate in Montana, actual internet speed is much slower than when I have 3G in a major city.
Anecdotally, rural PA mobile "broadband" is pretty awful. My parents are < 50 mi from Pittsburgh and satellite is the only option.
Mobile suffers for the same reason they don't have faster wired connections. Low population density and hilly terrain is challenging. :-(
