That's so interesting. I feel like defense in depth is commonly accepted now. Was this not the case until relatively recently?

I think in Knuth's case he's somewhat annoyed by declaring “goto” sinful, and was reacting to it. But the empirical approach is interesting.

More broadly I think as a programmer Knuth (http://ed-thelen.org/comp-hist/B5000-AlgolRWaychoff.html#7 …) is sui generis and it's hard to conclude anything from his practices…
