I worked as an electrical engineer for a decade. The practices aren't fundamentally any different than in software engineering.
Some things were better (testing, formal methods, perf analysis), and some things were worse (version control, automation, most tools).
Have you written anything about the use of formal tools in EE or Software Engineering? I'm curious for some concrete examples.
For formal models put into production I've seen, there are few/no guarantees. Either about practical performance or the implementation.
I don't really feel qualified to write about this. I've seen useful things (allegedly) proved with model checking and theorem proving but...
... I don't really understand how either works and the only experience I have with either is on toy problems.
Applying theorem proving to non-toy problems seems to require a PhD's worth of experience. Not so with model checking AFAICT, but...
It's still fairly specialized (I think?) and it's not my specialty
Also, I think hardware is different from software here in that people are much more likely to propagate guarantees down to the impl
