True, but AFAICT the rise of social media makes it easier to start a widely read blog, not harder.

I think a lot of the problem is just that the effort : reward ratio for blogging feels much higher than social media.

it's true, long-form writing is hard. but blogging is like 100x easier than academic writing so I'm there.

Time per blog post is orders of magnitude more than times per tweet, and doesn't feel proportionately rewarded more.
