Google outbids Mozilla in the AppStore and shows up first for searches on "Firefox". Don't worry, it's all part of their plan to not be evilpic.twitter.com/nLPDZhJrYj

Mobile is even worse. Two full pages of ads before 1 real result, which is followed by a full page of knowledge card. 3 pages til 2nd resultpic.twitter.com/DtFIW5fAcZ
User studies on old Google, where ads were more different from real results, found that many users confused ads with real results.
Since then, Google has made ads look more like search results. That's been great for revenue&profit. Not so great for most users, though.
There was that "quantitative design" where they would A/B test color choices for things like the ad boxes and see what made more $
Surprise: the color that "won" was a pale yellow that was barely different from the white background.
I talked to someone in ads about how ads went from "obviously" different to basically identical. They did multiple small A/B changes
You wouldn't have been able to make ads identical to search results in one shot, but by making multiple small changes it was easy.
Each time you A/B test making it more similar, $ goes up and each time only some more users get tricked, which doesn't sound so bad
Yeah, the profit motive ensures that these sorts of things only ratchet in one direction.
