Yep. One of my customers tried to measure my UI tool's text display perf by building long strings by concatenating one char at time.

So they were testing the perf of naive O(N^2) string concatenation. (Perl, python etc. all use wacky string impls to avoid this.)

Or benchmark GPUs/drivers with glxgears. Thankfully most have vsync now so you only get 60 fps anyway.
