Hah! My impression is that to get promoted I need to make "new" things, but IMO what we need is to fix existing things.

Well, we also need new stuff, but we're leaving 8-9 figs/yr on the table in areas I can impact with fixes to existing systems

There's no new thing I can think of that's a sure thing to have that kind of impact. But it's hard to get promo'd for fixes.

My last employer made changes to the promo system to prevent this exact problem, but I can't see us making that change here.
