it does work quite often especially with inexperienced folks. There are bigger and more established companies that do this too.

fwiw, for Australian intern/FTE interviews, microsoft gives (gave?) you ~30 minutes to decide unless you have a competing offer.

(specifically for new grads). It was pretty effective; I know several people who dropped other options to take the guaranteed job.
