Virtually all hardware/software patents are obvious things that anyone who thought about the problem would've come up with.

But there's a prisoner's dilemma where any large company that doesn't have lots of obvious patents will get destroyed in the courts.

@rygorous In some sense, this is true of all disciplines. Exchange for patent monopoly is public domain after expiry. -
