I think it's a half-hearted extension. AMD has a more aggressive plan. http://www.google.com/patents/US6671791 … 6-level page tables!

IBM has done this 16 years ago. z/Arch it lets the OS use 3-5 levels of tables covering 64-bits (16EB). I couldn't resist ;)
