I can't tell if devs are overpaid or not. When I look at the comp packages people are getting (often mid 6-figs), pay seems absurdly high.

But then I look at how much money one single dev can save a company and I wonder if devs are underpaid?

Chasing down a bug that costs 8-figs. If this pans out: 3rd co in a row where I've saved the co more than I'll likely make in a lifetime.

some reasons (probably not decisive) that this could be not unreasonable:

1) You could be replaceable--if you didn't track down the bug, they would get someone else to do it instead.

in some cases, but I'm chasing down bugs that are multiple years old on my own initiative. I doubt anyone else would look.

An intern came in and saved us 7-figs/yr, a sure sign we're burning $, but our incentive system stops people from looking for $.

but of course that same system prevents me from getting compensated for saving the company much larger amounts of money.
