      I can't tell if devs are overpaid or not. When I look at the comp packages people are getting (often mid 6-figs), pay seems absurdly high.

      But then I look at how much money one single dev can save a company and I wonder if devs are underpaid?

      Chasing down a bug that costs 8-figs. If this pans out: 3rd co in a row where I've saved the co more than I'll likely make in a lifetime.

          some reasons (probably not decisive) that this could be not unreasonable:

          1) You could be replaceable--if you didn't track down the bug, they would get someone else to do it instead.

          how do you quantify the $ value of a bug?

          hypothetically, say you have a 20k machine service at $2k/machine/yr -> $40m/yr operating cost. 2x perf improvement = $20m/yr

          .@danluu @candeira But it was a developer who wrote the bug to begin with, costing the co that money. Developers are a net benefit of $0

          I'm pretty sure that system is bringing in (net) 8-9 figures today. If devs were net $0 no company would hire a dev

          the question I guess is how many other people could also save the company 8 figures

          With massive cloud services, I suspect 8-fig perf bugs are not uncommon

          (i.e., they're regular perf bugs, that scaled)
