I can't tell if devs are overpaid or not. When I look at the comp packages people are getting (often mid 6-figs), pay seems absurdly high.

1) You could be replaceable--if you didn't track down the bug, they would get someone else to do it instead.

how do you quantify the $ value of a bug?

hypothetically, say you have a 20k machine service at $2k/machine/yr -> $40m/yr operating cost. 2x perf improvement = $20m/yr

I'm pretty sure that system is bringing in (net) 8-9 figures today. If devs were net $0 no company would hire a dev

With massive cloud services, I suspect 8-fig perf bugs are not uncommon
