for PhDs, I hear about offers up to $400k. These numbers are absurd compared to, say, five years ago.
if you had stock data, how would it be represented? Grant date/amount and vesting schedule? Or amount vested in current year?
Given that these are *offers*, numbers sound like signing bonus + salary, which is a weird dimensionless quantity.

Because the large companies Google, Facebook etc are extremely profitable. Thry pay out far less of their profits as compensation than eg Goldman Sachs. Lawyers pay almost all out.
