Frustrating to see more PR about great management at Google when that contrasts so sharply with what I hear from many who work/worked there.

Could you elaborate somewhere on the sorts of horrendous experiences, and also on the sorts of bad stuff eliminated?
It's less bureaucratic than (just for example) Microsoft or IBM. The bad stuff is hard to fit into a tweet.
