      @dhw It’s been extremely difficult for start-ups and middle america blue chips to compete for talent against silicon valley.

      @jeremiahg Both can, they choose not to. Significant equity for startups, significant cash for blue-chips. They don't want to pay.

      @dhw As an example, reportedly CISO are now commanding $500K - $1M+ now. ORGs are paying, just aint enough people to go round.

      @jeremiahg Paying a lot for a C-level does not translate into necessarily paying a lot for the actual line specialists you need.

      @dhw I’ve seen $200K+ there. I’m telling ya, there just ain’t enough people… no matter high much they’re willing to pay.

      @jeremiahg @dhw $200K/y isn’t very much compared to either Lenovo’s US$20B/y laptop sales, Google acqui-hires, or Wall Street quant bonuses.

      @jeremiahg @dhw Like, US$200k/year is about 0.001% of Lenovo’s laptop revenue here, or 1% of Lenovo’s CEO’s salary. Is infosec so worthless?

      @kragen @jeremiahg @dhw $200k/year in total comp or salary? That's not a lot for total comp nowadays: http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Google-Senior-Staff-Software-Engineer-Salaries-E9079_D_KO7,37.htm ….

      @danluu @jeremiahg @dhw That’s a great data point. I hadn’t realized Google paid US$440K (0.0022% of Lenovo’s laptop revenue) for hackers.

      @danluu @jeremiahg @dhw Although I imagine Lenovo can hire people in China cheaper than that. Imagine! The price of a laptop rising by 25¢!

      @kragen @jeremiahg @dhw Going rate for a normal engineer is more like http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Google-Senior-Software-Engineer-Salaries-E9079_D_KO7,31.htm …, but that's still north of $200k in total comp.

          @danluu @jeremiahg seems to be claiming that “scarce at $200+k/year” means “scarce”, but those Google numbers strongly refute that. @dhw
