I've been surprised at how many people think it's reasonable for companies like Lyft and Google to cut intern pay IME, opportunity cost of having senior devs ramp up interns dominates monetary cost, making intern pay cuts pointless https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23047687 … https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22954012 …

What fraction of internship cost do you think intern salaries are? (I have no idea) If full-time employees are taking pay cuts, seems like interns should also take pay cuts (even just considering fairness, not finances)

Based on what else I shipped last year, if I hadn't had an intern last year, I expect I would've shipped another $5M/yr of savings, i.e., profit, last year. We pay our interns ~$50/hr all in? 50*40*12 = 24k. If I assume a 4% interest rate, that's equivalent to ~$1k/yr, ~1/5000th

Lyft and Google situation are very different imo. If you had a Google US internship lined up and now you're working in your home country why should you get paid more than the interns at that countries local subsidiary? Why should you paid in MTV USD rates if your CoL is local?

Potentially cheaper to keep the same pay, and not have interns do any work

The interns are the only people who get anything done, because they have no standing meetings and don't have to participate in performance reviews and other full-time baggage. Seems like the internships are the last thing you should cut.

No idea their rationale, but are these cost of living changes? Google for example pays any employee less if they move to an office away from the bay area or NYC. Rent near my college was <20% of bay area. Interning from home could be a $ win. Still agree it is a bad look.

The housing subsidy might dominate in terms of cost — my W2 from Facebook put me down as earning $90k for the summer, when my total earnings pretax were only around $24k. The remainder was their costs for giving us a 1 bedroom in Mountain View for three months

I'm guessing very few senior devs are as productive as you? Otherwise companies would have much higher profit margins.
