There is a clear winner here

curl started with 40 options for 3 protocols and now has 230 options for 24 protocols, going down from 13 to 9.6 options per protocol! =B)

I suspect that ed(1) is more along the lines of kill(1) depending on whether you're talking BSD ed or GNU ed.

I see ffmpeg as an application not a command, and I think there's a subtle difference there. It's commands like "ip" that attempt to replace a whole series of specific commands than irritate me.

GNU coreutils (over the last decade at least) has been very careful when adding new options. We're also careful to provide constructive feedback on why it might be best _not_ to add an option, and have summarized some of these discussions at https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/rejected_requests.html …

My understanding of Dan's point is not so much that fewer command line options would be better, but that the original UNIX philosophy doesn't actually scale well.
