When he was 17, the world's current top go player (already top 10 by then) player posted his study schedule. A little vague, but probably no less than 12 hours a day of play or study. He did get 8-9 hours of sleep, though! /cc @hillelogram @danluu

Even if this is optimal from the standpoint of improving at the activity, it seems suboptimal for most people with no way to tell in advance if you're one of the people it's optimal for?

One thing about Go is that prodigies are identified extremely young, a few years younger even than in chess. This is the study regimen of an established professional (he says he studied less when aiming for pro status).

Japanese players typically have more normality: they stay in regular school longer as aspiring professionals, and seem to peak later in life. Unfortunately, they’ve also been dominated by their Korean/Chinese counterparts for 25 years.
