@danluu I recommended one of your articles to a reading group at work and some (justifiably?) had a pretty negative reaction to the formatting. Any thoughts on some basic css (line spacing, margins?) to help readability? Could even be a future topic.

I was considering writing a blog post on this, but when I've run this by typography people the've been *extremely* condescending on this topic (but have no actual evidence to point to and just appeal to their own authority), didn't really want more hate mail at the time.

Maybe ignore typographers and consider accessibility? I know little about formatting text for, say, dyslexic folks but generally the recommendations include using wider line spacing, sans serif fonts, and avoiding full black/white text/background.

What did these studies measure? Reading speed or comfort?

There won't be any empirical evidence, this is completely inside the mind of the observer. Some people see it, some people don't. Everyone who sees it will be condescending towards those who don't, for "obvious" reasons. (And CS people usually don't see it.)
